Divorce and Remarriage
Divorce and remarriage are some of the hardest conversations in pastoral ministry. It is a conversation that is best done in person. Understanding the unique situation for each individual is important in coming alongside a person needing compassionate care in truth and love.
Divorce rates have declined since the 1980s in the United States. That's some good news. A 2014 National Institute of Health study of divorced people found the most commonly reported major contributors to divorce were lack of commitment, infidelity, and conflict/arguing. The most common “final straw” reasons were infidelity, domestic violence, and substance use.
Google "divorce and remarriage" and you'll receive thousands of books and articles. Below are some articles providing a few reflections on divorce, remarriage, and the challenges of being married. These articles do not cover every facet of relationships, divorce, and remarriage. That's why it's helpful to meet in person with someone because each person's situation is unique like a snowflake.
