Confirmation Presentation Topics


Pick one of the topics below or one of your own ideas. Your topic must be OK’d by Pastor Eric by Saint Patrick's Day (March 17th).



Goals:

  • Demonstrating you know how to use the Bible to learn about its teachings.
  • Demonstrating you know how to use the Small Catechism to quickly find Biblical teachings and the Bible passages that help you understand them.
  • Sharing your faith, particularly around the topic you select.
  • Demonstrating you can both learn and apply the Bible’s truths to your life.
  • Do not make the paper sound academic.
  • Work on a topic that touches you personally.
  • Present the paper in a way that is applicable to everyday life and heartfelt (e.g., talking to a friend).

Some Potential Topics:

  1. Discuss Jesus’ humiliation and exaltation from the catechism, pp.130-145. Explain how this connects to you.
  2. Report on the Old Testament Temple sacrificial system (You can Google this). Show how these sacrifices pointed to Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins.
  3. Explain the Passover meal and show how our Lord’s Supper grew out of it and replaced it.
  4. Select one of the 10 Commandments and demonstrate its wisdom. Show how Jesus kept the commandment for us.
  5. Explain the Bible’s teaching about Baptism and how God blesses us in this sacrament.
  6. Explain the Bible’s teaching on the Lord’s Supper and how God blesses us in this sacrament.
  7. Discuss the first Easter and how the Bible connects Jesus’ resurrection to you.
  8. Discuss the act of confession and forgiveness in our church services and how God forgives those who repent and trust in Jesus Christ.
  9. Research the difference between salvation by grace for Jesus’ sake and trying to win heaven by doing good works. Focus on key Bible passages.
  10. Explain what heaven and hell are like, who inhabits them, and how one gets to each of those places.
  11. Research the Bible’s claim that it is God’s Word.  Discuss the role of the Bible in your life.
  12.  Report on why Jesus had to die on the cross and what this means to you.
  13. Show from Scripture that Christianity is a religion of hope and love.
  14. YOUR OWN IDEA.


Format:

  • The Confirmation paper is to be 11-point font, single-spaced, and three-pages in length.
  • At the top of the paper, you should provide your name and title of the paper.
  • Use spell check on your paper.
  • Print out the first draft and look for typos and errors before submitting the paper.
  • Read it out loud to a parent or friend and fix missing words and typos.


Timeline:

  1. Select a topic by Saint Patrick's Day (March 17th). Email Pastor Eric and cc: Jeff to be OK'd the topic.
  2. Email first draft of the paper by Easter.
  3. Email final draft by May 1st.
  4. Present paper on Wednesday, June 1st at 7:00 PM.
  5. Confirmation service is Sunday, June 5th at 9:00 AM. Please arrive 30 minutes early. Confirmands should see Sally first thing when they arrive.
